Fight to Keep Sole Women's Minimum Security Prison Open Continues

The legal battle over the eventual fate of Isabel MacNeill House, Canada's only minimum security prison for women, will be back in a Kingston courtroom after Thanksgiving.

Justice Douglas Belch, administrative judge for Kingston's Superior Court of Justice, has set aside four days, beginning Oct. 9, for the habeas corpus application that seeks to block closure of the 100-year-old, limestone edifice at the corner of King Street and Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard.

Male prisoners have opportunities to be housed in prison settings that are exclusively minimum security.
