Opposition parties call for new pay equity law

The three federal opposition parties and representatives of the Pay Equity Network will be calling on the Harper government to enact a new, proactive pay equity law.

The Conservatives have so far rejected the recommendations of a federal Pay Equity Task Force which called for a complete overhaul of the current legislation three years ago.

The Pay Equity Network is made up central labour bodies and individual unions, equality-seeking organizations and provincial pay equity coalitions, including the Canadian Labour Congress, the National Association of Women and the Law, the Women's Legal Education and Action Fund, the National Organization of Immigrant and Visible Minority Women of Canada, the Quebec Federation of Labour, the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers' Union and the New Brunswick Pay Equity Coalition
