NDP ready for elections

Federal NDP candidate Jo-Anne Boulding, left, and provincial candidate Sara Hall chat during the nomination meeting Tuesday evening at the Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Ms Boulding took aim at the Conservatives’ recent cuts to Status of Women Canada.

If elected, she pledged to advocate for greater gender equality in Ottawa.

“Equality is still completely misunderstood in Canadian politics,” Boulding said. “The Harper government is silencing 52 per cent of the population. We’re not a minority. We’re not an interest group. We are half the population.”

So you are half the population. And you want gender equality. I guess that means that men should have a "Status of Men" federally-funded organization, eh? Or, to keep costs down, we could just scrap SOW and then men and women would truly be gender-equal regarding the Status of X boondoggle.

HAH! Erik, you're hilarious.

When men make 71% of what women make, are 50% sure they're going to experience violence or sexual abuse during their lifetime, are doing the brunt of childrearing, more than 65% of unpaid labour, and make up only 20.7% of our federal government -- then yes, a status of men might be in order.

Until then -- it's starkly clear that Canada needs a Status of Women.

You might want to read up a bit on women's (in)equality in Canada before suggesting that a Status of Men is what we need.

And how exactly has the SOW program helped women in any significant way? All those thing you mentioned take place outside of the government (except for the seats thing, which I'll get to in a moment) and the government can't just change people's thoughts. If some people are sexist the government isn't going to fix that.

As for women only being only 20% of MPs? Maybe if more women decided to run we'd vote for them. In Parry Sound-Muskoka there was only one woman candidate. I'm sure if more women decided to seek nominations you'd see more women in the House. If some women are complaining about gender inequality in the house maybe they should stop whining and run themselves.

PS: Maybe this time Jo-Anne will actually be in Canada during the federal campaign.

And that whole thing about "Harper’s Conservatives want women to stay home and be quiet" is total BS. Has Harper taken away abortion rights? what about universal suffrage? Nope. Maybe you should stop making up stories and find some real issues to deal with.

erik, seriously boy, get a life.
or, should you continue to feel so entitled to make your (remarkably uninformed, insubstantial, and specious) opinions known, be prepared to get schooled.
